Antonio Sanchez Wins Critics’ Choice Movie Award for ‘Birdman’

critics-choiceAntonio Sanchez was honored with the Critics’ Choice Movie Award in the Best Score category for his music for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s Birdman at tonight’s 19th Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. The other composers nominated in the Best Score category were Alexandre Desplat for The Imitation Game, Johann Johannsson for The Theory of Everything, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross for Gone Girl and Hans Zimmer for Interstellar.

In the Best Song category, the song Glory from Selma, performed by John Legend & Common aka John Stephens & Lonnie Lynn won the Critics’ Choice Movie Award.


Antonio Sanchez Performs ‘Birdman’ Score Live to Picture

antonio-sanchezLast night, Antonio Sanchez performed his original score for Alejandro González Iñárritu’s comedy drama Birdman live to picture at ACE Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. The jazz drummer who made his film scoring debut on the project was presented to the stage by actor Michael Keaton, who is up for an Oscar for his lead performance in the film. Check out a behind the scenes video, which features interviews with the composer/drummer and Keaton, as well as footage from the event after the jump. Sanchez’s score is available on Milan Records and the movie, which is nominated for 9 Oscars, including Best PictureBest DirectorBest Actor, Best Supporting Actor/ActressBest Cinematography and Best Original Screenplay, is now playing in theaters.

Michael Giacchino Named Film Composer of the Year at World Soundtrack Awards

michael-giacchinoMichael Giacchino has been named Film Composer of the Year 2015 at the 15th World Soundtrack Awards, tonight’s closing event of the 42nd Ghent Film Festival. The composer’s output over the last year includes such titles as Inside OutTomorrowlandJupiter Ascending and this year’s highest grossing film, Jurassic World. Giacchino previously received a World Soundtrack Award in the Discovery of a Year category back in 2006. In the Best Original Film Score of the Year category, Antonio Sanchez was honored for his score to this year’s Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards, Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance). The jazz drummer/composer also received the award in 2015’s Discovery of the Year category. The Public Choice Award went to composer John Paesano for his score for The Maze Runner. In addition, The Apology Song from the animated feature The Book of Life was named Best Original Song. The track was written by Gustavo Santaolalla, with lyrics by Paul Williams and performed by Diego Luna. The Sabam Award for Best Young Composer goes to Peer Kleinschmidt. Throughout the evening, the Brussels Philharmonic and the Flemish Radio Choir, conducted by Dirk Brossé, played a selection from the extensive oeuvre of this year’s guest of honorAlan Silvestri, including a world premiere performance of his score for this year’s The Walk. Also performed was the music of last year’s Discovery winner, Daniel Pemberton, with the premiere of his score for Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs. In addition, music of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner Patrick Doyle was also performed at the event, including the premiere of his score for Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella. grammysAntonio Sanchez has won the Grammy Award for his music for Alejandro G. Inarritu’s Birdman in the Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media category. The other nominated composers in the category included Hans Zimmer (Interstellar), Johann Johannsson (The Theory of Everything), Justin Hurwitz (Whiplash) and Alexandre Desplat (The Imitation Game). The jazz drummer/composer accepted his award in person. In the Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media, Lonnie Lynn, Che Smith & John Stephen won the award for the song Glory from Ava DuVernay’s feature Selma. Paramount Pictures’ Randy Spendlove accepted the award on their behalf. In the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for Visual Media category, the soundtrack album for Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me, which is produced by Julian Raymond and released by Big Machine Records, was honored with a Grammy award.

Antonio Sanchez to Score Epix’s ‘Get Shorty’ TV Series

antonio-sanchezAntonio Sanchez is scoring the upcoming Epix original series Get Shorty. The show is created by Davey Holmes (Shameless) inspired by Elmore Leonard’s 1990 bestselling thriller comedy novel and stars Chris O’Dowd, Ray Romano, Sean Bridgers, Megan Stevenson, Goya Robles, Lucy Walters, Sarah Stiles, Antwone Tanner and Carolyn Dodd. The series follows a hitman from Nevada who tries to become a movie producer in Hollywood as a means to leave his criminal past behind. Holmes is also executive producing the MGM Television production with  Adam Arkin (“The Americans,” “Billions”) and Allen Coulter (The SopranosRemember Me) who also directed the first episode. Sanchez is best known for his Golden Globe- and Grammy-winning score for Alejandro Inarritu’s BirdmanGet Shorty will premiere later this year on Epix.

Premiering tonight is the Epix original series Get Shorty created by Davey Holmes and starring Chris O’Dowd, Ray Romano, Sean Bridgers, Megan Stevenson, Goya Robles, Lucy Walters, Sarah Stiles, Antwone Tanner and Carolyn Dodd. The show’s original music composed by Golden Globe and Grammy Award winner Antonio Sanchez (Birdman) who makes his television scoring debut on the project. Premiering on Wednesday, August 16, is the new NBC comedy Marlon created by Christopher Moynihan & Marlon Wayans and starring Wayans, Essence Atkins, Notlim Taylor, Amir O’Neil, Bresha Webb and Diallo Riddle. Dwayne Wayans (Dance FlickMy Wife and Kids) is composing the show’s original music. Also premiering on Friday is the sci-fi thriller What Happened to Monday directed by Tommy Wirkola and starring Noomi Rapace, Glenn Close, Willem Dafoe, Marwan Kenzari, Christian Rubeck, Pål Sverre Hagen, Clara Read, Tomiwa Edun, Cameron Jac and Christian Wagner. The film’s original music is composed by Christian Wibe (Dead Snow, Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead). Varese Sarabande will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score on Friday. Premiering on Friday, August 18, is Marvel’s Netflix original series The Defenders developed by Douglas Petrie & Marco Ramirez and starring Charlie Cox as Daredevil, Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage, and Finn Jones as Iron Fist. John Paesano (DaredevilThe Maze RunnerPacific Rim Uprising) is composing the show’s original music. Missing from last week’s TV music roundup was the new AT&T original series Mr. Mercedes developed by David E. Kelley based on Stephen King’s novel and starring Brendan Gleeson, Harry Treadaway, Jharrel Jerome, Mary-Louise Parker, Justin Lupe, Scott Lawrence, Kelly Lynch, Robert Stanton, Holland Taylor and Breeda Wool. The show doesn’t feature any original score. Tricia Halloran serves as the project’s music supervisor. The drama revolves around a psychopathic killer who drives a stolen Mercedes into a crowd and a recently retired detective who tries to bring him down. Mr. Mercedes premiered on August 9 on Audience Network and will air every Wednesday night.

Sony Classical will release a soundtrack album for the Epix original series Get Shorty. The album features selections of the original music from the show’s first season composed by Grammy Award winner and Golden Globe nominee Antonio Sanchez (Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)). The soundtrack will be released this Friday, January 26 and is now available for pre-order on Amazon. Get Shorty is created by Davey Holmes inspired by Elmore Leonard’s 1990 bestselling thriller comedy novel and stars Chris O’Dowd, Ray Romano, Sean Bridgers, Megan Stevenson, Goya Robles, Lucy Walters, Sarah Stiles, Antwone Tanner and Carolyn Dodd. Antonio Sanchez to Score Shyam Madiraju’s ‘Harami: The Bastard’

Antonio Sanchez has signed on to score the upcoming drama Harami: The Bastard. The film is co-written directed by Shyam Madiraju (Eden) and stars Emraan Hashmi Emraan Hashmi and Subrat Dutta. The movie revolves around an orphan teenage pickpocket working the trains of Mumbai along with his gang whose life takes a turn when he meets the daughter of one of his victims who committed suicide after being robbed. Mohit Rastogi, Parvesh Kumar and Dori Zuckerman are producing the Gobsmack Entertainment production.The project marks the jazz drummer/composer’s second narrative feature scoring assignment following Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), for which he received a Golden Globe Awards nomination and a Grammy Award. He also scored all episodes of the Epix original series Get Shorty and the documentary Politics, Instructions Manual. Harami is currently in post-production and is expected to premiere later this year.


Antonio Sanchez Scoring HBO’s ‘The Anarchists’

Grammy Award-winning jazz drummer and composer Antonio Sanchez (Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), Get Shorty, Politics, Instructions Manual) has written the original score for the new HBO original documentary series The Anarchists. The show is directed by Todd Schramke and tells the story of “Anarchapulco,” an event that was originally created as a conference held in Acapulco, Mexico, promoting the ideals of pure anarchy. The 6-parter follows individuals engaged in this movement with full access to the drama that ensues as a community tries to live alongside tourists and drug cartels with only the principles of anarchy as their guideposts.Schramke is also executive producing the Blumhouse Television production with Jason Blum (Get Out, Halloween), Jeremiah Crowell (The Last Defense), Kim Kylland, Chris McCumber & Mary Lisio (Worst Roommate Ever), Jeremy Gold (Sharp Objects, Hell on Wheels), James Buddy Day (What Happened, Brittany Murphy?) and Andre Gaines & Allen Bain (The Lady and the Dale). The Anarchists will premiere on July 10 on HBO and will also be available to stream on HBO Max.

Also in the U.S. today is the Canadian TV series SkyMed created by Julie Puckrin and starring Natasha Calis, Ace “Aason” Nadjiwon, Morgan Holmstrom, Praneet Akilla, Thomas Elms, Kheon Clarke, Mercedes Morris and Braeden Clarke. Peter Chapman & Robert Carli (Wynonna Earp, Workin’ Moms) are composing the show’s original music. The drama, which follows the triumphs, heartbreaks and tribulations of budding nurses and pilots flying air ambulances in remote Northern Canada, is premiering today in Canada on CBC and is making its U.S. debut on Paramount+.

Premiering on Thursday, July 14, is the Netflix original series Resident Evil developed by Andrew Dabb based on the horror franchise and starring Ella Balinska, Tamara Smart, Adeline Rudolph, Siena Agudong, Lance Reddick and Paola Núñez. The show’s original music composed by Gregory Reveret. Milan Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the composer’s score and a new song by deadmau5 feat. Skylar Grey on July 15. Also premiering on Thursday is the Netflix animated series Kung Fu Panda: The Dragon Knight based on DreamWorks Animation’s film franchise and starring Jack Black, Rita Ora, James Hong, Chris Geere, Amy Hill, Nolan North and Della Saba. Robert Lydecker (Iron Fist, Sleepy Hollow, Lethal Weapon, Designated Survivor) & Kevin Lax (The First Purge, Burning Sands) are composing the show’s original music. The animated comedy, which follows legendary warrior Po as he teams up with an elite English knight on a global quest to save the world, will be available to stream exclusively on Netflix.

Premiering on Friday, July 15, is the Disney+/Disney Channel original movie Zombies 3 directed by Paul Hoen and starring Milo Manheim, Meg Donnelly, Ariel Martin and Chandler Kinney . The film’s original score is composed by George S. Clinton (Austin PowersMortal Kombat, Tooth Fairy, Beverly Hills NinjaWild Things) and Amit May Cohen (Zombies 2). Walt Disney Records will release a soundtrack album featuring the songs from the movie on Friday. Also premiering on Friday is the Amazon original movie Don’t Make Me Go directed by Hannah Marks and starring John Cho, Mia Isaac, Mitchell Hope, Stefania LaVie Owen, Jemaine Clement and Kaya Scodelario. Jessica Rose Weiss (Cinderella, Dog Gone Trouble, Afterlife of the Party, Friendsgiving) has composed the film’s original score. Mychael Danna (Life of Pi, Moneyball, Capote) has produced the score. The drama, which follows a single father and his reluctant teenage daughter as they embark on an unforgettable cross country road trip, premiered at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival and will be available to stream exclusively on Prime Video.

Jessica Rose Weiss has also composed the original music for the comedy 1UP directed by Kyle Newman and starring Paris Berelc, Taylor Zakhar Perez, Hari Nef, Nicholas Coombe, Kevin Farley and Ruby Rose.
